Film in Hesse

Hesse is a German medium-scaled film business place, showing a high profile. The Hesse government sponsors the Hessian film and cinema culture with the objective to promote diversity and quality. Ranging from traditional cinema to creative and ambitious film productions, unique film locations and the most modern post production Hesse offers a state of the art film business.

The richness of film festivals is impressive. goEast presents middle and Eastern European Films. Lucas is a children film festival of the highest category. NipponConnenction is world wide biggest Japanese film festival outside Japan: The open air short film festival at Weiterstadt exists since 30 years the. The Exground Filmfest in Wiesbaden specialised in independent productions, in the north of Hesse the Kassel Dokumentar- und Videofestival held his 20th birthday in 2007. The eDIT- Filmmaker’s Festival is an internationally highly acclaimed and unique event around digital film production.

Awarded films made in Hesse

Hesse also shows a respectable number of exceptional movie theatres and art houses. Traumstern in Lich was awarded the best art house movie theatre in 2005

Hessian film productions attract more and more attention. 2005 the film “Fremde Haut” (different skin) was awarded the Hessische Filmrpreis and was screened at the Berlinale. Just recently “Die Konferenz” a co production with the Hessische Rundfunk also also award winner of the Hessische Kinopreis 2005 was nominated for the Grimme Preis. The Hessian Film- and Kinopreis is a very specific decoration for film and movie theatres. The Hessische Rundfunk and the Frankfurter Buchmesse both are important sponsors. The gala takes place during the Frankfurt International Book Fair to strengthen Hesse’s position in the film and media business.

Promotion of the next generation and film institutions

The promotion of the next generations is also an important objective. The State of Hesse promotes film academies and film education for example in the context of the Hessian youth media festival Visionale, which in November 2007 took place for the 20th time and offers a possibility for the young generation to present their productions to a broader audience.

With major institutions like Deutsches Filminstitut, Deutsches Filmmuseum, SPIO/FSK, Filmbewertungsstelle Wiesbaden, das Kuratorium junger deutscher Film sowie last, but not least, die Friedrich-Wilhelm, the curatorship of young German film and last but not least Friedrich-Wilhelm-Murnau-Stiftung Hesse carries imporotant contact points for the film industry.
